A hot water bottle is a classic comfort for cold evenings, and it still sits at the centre of many winding-down routines. It is also a product where a few habits make a real difference to safety. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) published a set of practical tips in October 2025, alongside news that the British Standards for these products have been reinstated. This guide sets out that advice and what the standards changes mean for anyone buying a new one.<\/p>\n

Why RoSPA published advice<\/h2>\n

RoSPA’s article of 14 October 2025 reports data from the Children’s Burns Trust, released for National Burns Awareness Day, showing that burn injuries from hot water bottles rose 11 per cent in 2024 compared with 2023, with nearly 1,000 cases in 2024, the highest annual total in more than 20 years. It adds that injuries have doubled since 2019. RoSPA says that although updated standards will help improve product safety, it is still important to use these items carefully, especially older ones.<\/p>\n

Check the age of the bottle<\/h2>\n

RoSPA advises identifying the age of the bottle. Most hot water bottles have a date wheel, a small circular mark that resembles a daisy, usually stamped near the neck, which indicates the month and year of manufacture. RoSPA explains that as hot water bottles age, the materials can degrade, increasing the risk of splitting or leaking, so it is important to check and replace older bottles regularly. Checking the date wheel takes a few seconds and is the simplest way to find out whether an inherited or long-forgotten bottle is due for replacement.<\/p>\n

Inspect it before each use<\/h2>\n

Before each use, RoSPA says to inspect the hot water bottle or warmer for cracks, splits or signs of wear, and to replace it if in doubt. It also says to read and follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions supplied with the product.<\/p>\n

Fill it correctly<\/h2>\n

RoSPA’s advice is not to overfill: fill hot water bottles to a maximum of two-thirds capacity using hot, not boiling, water, to reduce the risk of bursting.<\/p>\n

Use a cover and avoid pressure<\/h2>\n

RoSPA recommends always using a fabric cover or wrapping the bottle in a towel to prevent direct contact with skin. It also advises avoiding sitting or lying on hot water bottles, because pressure can cause the bottle to burst or leak. In practice, that means placing the bottle beside a foot or a lap, and not underneath the body, when settling into a chair or bed.<\/p>\n

Microwaveable warmers<\/h2>\n

RoSPA’s advice also covers microwaveable personal warmers, such as wheat bags: only heat them for the recommended time, and never reheat before the item has fully cooled. The manufacturer’s instructions for the exact product are the reference for timing.<\/p>\n

What has changed with the standards<\/h2>\n

BSI’s press release of 7 May 2025 explains that it reformed the national committee tasked with reviewing and updating the hot water bottle standard, in response to concerns about burns and following calls from RoSPA and the Children’s Burns Trust for an updated specification. It states that the relevant standard, BS 1970:2012 for hot water bottles manufactured from rubber and PVC, was published in 2012, that the earlier committee was disbanded in March 2024 because there was no chair in place, and that the standard was withdrawn under BSI procedure, which requires systematic review every five years. Revisions were expected to focus on the recommended lifespan of hot water bottles, with a two-year manufacturers’ warranty.<\/p>\n

RoSPA’s October 2025 article reports the next step: BSI has reinstated the British Standards for hot water bottles and microwaveable personal warmers, giving manufacturers clear guidance, and has appointed RoSPA’s Head of Policy, Adrian Simpson, as chair of the Hot Water Bottles and Microwaveable Personal Warmers Committee, which can review and revise both standards after full public consultation. For a shopper, the practical point is that a new bottle should come with the manufacturer’s instructions and date wheel information, and any updated version of the standard is a matter for the manufacturer to follow.<\/p>\n
